Programme Information
Coordinator, Michelle Ihaka talks about the work we do. We provide specialist 24-hour free & confidential crisis support and information to anyone in our community who has been directly or indirectly affected by sexual harm (recent or historic). We offer support to whānau, friends & parents/caregivers.
Services include social work/crisis support to meet ongoing needs. Advocacy & referral for other services. Assistance with Medical, Police and Court processes, referral to ACC Counselling. We deliver Education/Prevention Programmes into local Secondary Schools/Community. We also manage the National Rape Crisis Line 0800 88 33 00.
“Rape Awareness Week” returns to the Wairarapa the first week of May. We continue to bring awareness around rape & sexual abuse and encourage healthy conversations within our communities.
About Me
Michelle is of Ngati Kahungunu & Rangitane descent. Has over 22 years’ sexual violence sector experience. The frontline practitioner of the Collective, supporting survivors & whanau, managing collaborative partnerships with public & private stakeholders. Michelle is the voice of survivors to advocate change.
Michelle is a registered social worker. She is recognised by other agencies and gives valuable input to national working parties on sexual violence matters. Michelle received the 2023 Police Area Commander's Commendation Award acknowledging her 20year service to survivors. Michelle was a finalist in the 2023 ANZASW Social Work Leadership Award.
