Programme Information

The Wairarapadeutsches get together for Kaffee und Kuchen and try not to get crumbs on the microphone. Aspects of German life and culture are mixed up with tales of immigrant life in Neuseeland. Other ex-pats from throughout the Wairarapa are invited to join the party to share their knowledge of their homeland and their experiences as German Kiwis, and visitors from Deutschland may also be grilled about their travels. Ambitious experiments like live cooking demonstrations are occasionally attempted. We play our favourite German music, wir sprechen immer in Deutsch, and we are slowly making our way through Veronika’s Follkornbrot.

About Us

I am Nico from Lübeck. I studied at the Ottersberg Art School near Bremen, where I was determined to direct my life anti the establishment and to explore a world where humans don’t see themselves as absolute, imposing their will on others and on the environment. I decided to study art to be able to demonstrate my idea of a more truthful life and I am still working to accomplish my vision. Being in New Zealand is influencing my work… the lush vegetation, the wind and the sea, the spikiness of some plants, the deep and somehow overwhelming forests, the mountains. All that inspires me to create sculptural objects in harmony with my philosophy.

Hi I am Tine from Mainz. I first came to New Zealand 25 years ago and fell in love with this country, its landscapes, vegetation, people and animals. This was also, incidentally, exactly half my life-time ago (already????). The transition from a Biology student to farmer’s wife; life in the city to living somewhere on a sheep farm at the back of beyond  out of the metropolis of Martinborough; was physically swift, but mentally and psychologically a slow journey of adjustments.  After all these years I am happy to feel very much at home in NZ but have not forgotten the trials and ups and downs along the way. Most listeners to this program will have their own story to relate to being a part of two countries. These days I’m keeping myself busy with our two children, exploring this country on foot or by motorbike, being part of our little community and singing and playing in a band.

I am Veronika from Engen, Hohentwiel. I studied at Deutsche Schule in Sevilla, Spain and worked in Europe and the UK in the hotel industry. I now live on a farm in Alfredton and work as a manager at Arrow FM.

Hi I'm Christina and I grew up in Riesa, which is in the east of Germany. I came to New Zealand 4 years ago and my plans were to travel around for a year. After 2 months of traveling I fell in love with my partner and this beautiful country. And I've been here since. I work as an assistant manager in a little bar in town. Being so far away from home is hard sometimes, but luckily I am part of this amazing group of German friends who remind me how to speak German and how to eat and cook delicious German meals.
