Kia hiwa rÄ, kia hiwa rÄ, kia hiwa rÄ ki tÄ“nei tuku, kia hiwa rÄ ki tÄ“rÄ tuku – kia tÅ«, kia oho, kia mataara! Nau mai, haere mai…
Join us on a journey as we explore the culture, history, traditions, and realities of local descendants and dwellers of NgÄti Kahungunu-ki-Wairarapa and RangitÄne.
KahuRangi brings together our rich Wairarapa history with its current and vibrant reality – by delving into local kÅrero, pÅ«rÄkau and taonga of Wairarapa while also helping whÄnau to stay connected and up to date with relevant kaupapa MÄori across Aotearoa.
Each week, we meet people, hear stories, explore our whenua, discuss kaupapa of significance including Wairarapatanga, TÅ«puna Parenting Ways, MÄori Entreprenuereality, Aotearoa History, Equity in Education and more. Your local whÄnau are your guides as we journey together to discover the treasures of our place.
About me
Suni Brown – RangitÄne, NgÄti Kahungunu, NgÄti Wai, NgÄti Manuhiri:
Suni Brown was born and raised in Wairarapa – the domain of the RangitÄne people who have lived in the surrounding Wairarapa areas for 800 years. In this time, there have come many a great story of this area’s formidable ancestors, including the great ancestor Kahungunu (NgÄti Kahungunu) for which much history is known. The NgÄti Kahungunu and RangitÄne lineages are important and Suni hopes to be able to share some of the histories and stories that have been transferred to him by his prominent tÄ«puna or ancestors, on KahuRangi. He sees this as a platform for inviting guests along for in-depth interviews, and knowledge-sharing opportunities, providing all listeners; near or far; MÄori or non-MÄori, local or otherwise, a thorough insight into the rich history of Wairarapa’s mana whenua and hau kÄinga (home people).
Waireka Collings – NgÄpuhi, NgÄti Hine, Ngaiterangi, NgÄti Pukenga, NgÄti Ranginui:
Born and raised in Masterton, Waireka, is a ‘whÄngai’ of the Wairarapa through her birth in this region, where she also received her Reo MÄori. Her mother, Paremo Matthews has been part of many Wairarapa kaupapa to revitalise the language all her life, and when Waireka was only 3 months old, and the first KÅhanga Reo opened, Mum Paremo was one of only a handful of people who had native Reo MÄori.
Waireka is the founder of the PuÄwai PÅ«rau STEM Academy who connect young people to mentors who will empower and support them to succeed in their academic pursuits. Her passions are to see educational transformation for tamariki MÄori in the community, to update the narrative to reflect thriving taiohi MÄori of Wairarapa who know who they are, and to see young ones inspired by what they see MÄori can achieve.
Catch her on KahuRangi where she will talk all things education!
Te Ataahia (Taahia) Hurihanganui – RangitÄne, NgÄti Kahungunu-ki-Wairarapa, NgÄti Ira, NgÄti Porou, NgÄti Tahu-NgÄti WhÄoa, TÅ«hourangi-NgÄti WÄhiao, NgÄti Whakaue-NgÄti Te Roro-o-te-Rangi:
Te Ataahia, also known by her nickname, Taahia is a proud mother raising her children back in her hometown of Whakaoriori (Masterton) Wairarapa after many years living away – both in other tÅ«rangawaewae (ancestral homes) like Takapau in the Hawkes Bay, and Pito-Åne and Tapu-te-Ranga in Te Whanganui-a-Tara/Wellington as well as abroad in Rome and Sicily, Italy, where her husband hails from. She is deeply passionate about her indigenous culture, language, heritage, and traditions, and hopes to celebrate and share this through her KahuRangi sessions which will delve into the indigenous MÄori time-system and environmental calendar ‘te Maramataka’, traditional MÄori parenting practices, and other aspects of interest related to MÄori language and culture. Join her in exploring, learning from, and nurturing the treasures of Te Ao MÄori! |
